Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains how Butterfly AI LLC (“we”, “us”, “our”) handles information in the Transla iOS app. Transla is a private, on-device translator: you type or speak, and translation runs on your iPhone or iPad.
Your speech, typed text, and translations are not sent to our servers. Network is used only to download the on-device models the app needs to work.
Information we process
Speech and microphone
If you grant microphone access, Transla records audio so it can transcribe what you say. Transcription uses on-device models (Whisper and, for English and Chinese, Zipformer). Audio is processed on your device and is not uploaded to us. You can revoke microphone access in iOS Settings at any time. Typed translation works without the microphone.
Text you type or translate
Source text and translations are processed locally by the on-device translation model (Qwen3-0.6B). We do not receive this content.
Translation history
Transla can save recent translations on your device (source text, translation, languages, and time) so you can look them up later. History is stored only in the app’s local storage. You can delete individual items or clear all history in the app. Uninstalling Transla deletes this data.
Preferences
The app stores simple settings on your device, such as whether you finished onboarding, your source and target languages, and whether live transcription is on. These stay on the device.
On-device models
On first launch, Transla downloads speech and translation models so the app can work offline. These files are stored in the app’s local storage. The download request itself may include standard technical information that any HTTPS download includes (for example IP address and device/user-agent), which our download host or CDN may see in server logs.
What we do not collect
- No account, email, or sign-in
- No advertising, tracking SDKs, or analytics SDKs in the app
- No sale of personal information
- No cloud backup of your speech or translations to our servers
How we use information
On-device data is used only to:
- Transcribe speech and translate text on your device
- Show and speak results, including optional text-to-speech via Apple’s speech APIs
- Keep a local history you can review or delete
- Remember your language and live-transcription preferences
Where data is stored
- On your device: audio during a session, transcripts, translations, history, preferences, and downloaded models.
- Our download servers: model files are served from whisperflow.org (or a related CDN). We do not use those requests to build a profile of what you translate.
Apple may process limited data according to Apple’s policies when you download the app from the App Store or when the system provides speech voices.
Sharing
We do not sell your personal information. We do not share your speech or translations with third parties. We may disclose information if required by law or to protect our rights.
Your choices
- Deny or revoke microphone access in iOS Settings.
- Delete history in the app, or delete Transla to remove local data including models.
- Use typed translation only, without speaking.
Children’s privacy
Transla is a general-purpose translator and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it where required by law.
Changes
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page will change when we do. Please review this page periodically.
